Jersey Part One

A DAY AT THE ZOO

Now I'm going to start this a bit backwards and tell you about a day trip on our holiday before I actually tell you about my holiday. But this day trip was ONE OF THE BEST!

When we told friends and family we were going to Jersey over New Year’s most of them said we HAD to go to Durrell Zoo and I am now going to tell you the same: If you get are lucky enough to visit Jersey then you MUST go to the ZOO. It is one of the very best.

What's also marvellous about this particular zoo is that they have THE most wonderful cafe/restaurant with AMAZING FOOD! So our day started with breakfast in that very cafe, pancakes with maple syrup and they were... well... incredible.

Then it was time to start our adventure around the Zoo. One of the best things about Durrell Zoo is that you really get the feeling that the enclosures are for the animals and NOT for the visitors however this means that if the animals don't want to be seen, then they're not. So after visiting serial enclosures we were starting to worry that the cold weather was going to lead to no animal sightings. However we then came across the meerkats and we could see why they are so in vogue at the moment. They are crazy cute.

Next was the turn of the Orang-utans, the Lemur’s, bats, flamingos and crazy looking birds. Each animal was so entertaining in their own way. Such beautiful creatures that seem to be both; so aware and so disinterested in our presence.

For lunch we headed back to the cafe and I was expecting big things after such a delicious start to the day. However it did not prepare me for what was to come. I ordered pizza and chips. What arrived was not only presented in a way I've never seen before but was tastier than any other. Writing about it now, is making me hungry. Darren opted for a chicken curry and wasn't disappointed either!

After lunch it was back to find the animals we'd missed and go back and have another round with the meerkats! It took the rest of the day to finish exploring. We got to see the Gorillas being feed, including a three month old baby gorilla, needless to say this was a major highlight and ridiculously cute!

Darren and I also feel in love with the playful otters that just didn't keep still.

My top three:
  1. The Meerkats
  2. The Otters
  3. The Gorillas

Darrens top three:

So will you be planning a visit any time soon?
Or have you already been? What was your favorite?
